How to Log RPE (Perceived Exertion) in Your Workout

RPE is how hard the set felt to you. Two sets with the same load and the same reps can feel easy one day and brutal another. Load and reps don't show that difference. RPE does.

Logging and template tool. It does not replace a personal trainer (CREF) or medical advice. If you feel pain, injury, dizziness or unusual fatigue, stop and see a professional.

What is RPE

RPE stands for Rating of Perceived Exertion. It's a score you give a set right after you finish it, saying how hard it was for you.

In IronSystem, the scale runs from 1 to 10: 1 is easy, 10 is your max. No formula or equipment needed. It's your perception, written down on the spot.

Why log it on top of load and reps

Load and reps tell you what you did. RPE tells you what it took.

That context helps you read your own history. A session with your usual numbers might have been comfortable, or it might have taken everything you had. If you don't write it down, two weeks later you won't remember which was which.

Example: on Monday you bench pressed your usual load for your usual reps and logged RPE 6. On Thursday, after a bad night's sleep, you repeated exactly the same load and reps but logged RPE 9. The load and rep numbers are identical. RPE shows the two days weren't the same, and you'll understand why when you look back.

Where to log it in IronSystem

RPE lives in the Advanced view when you log a workout:

  1. Open Register workout.
  2. Switch to Advanced.
  3. Under Set details, fill in the RPE field.

The app explains the field itself: "How hard the set felt. 1 is easy, 10 is all-out. Optional; not converted to RIR." To reread the explanation, tap About RPE.

Two things worth knowing:

  • RPE is optional. You can log just sets, reps and load and save the session as usual.
  • RPE and RIR are separate fields. Set details also has optional fields for RIR, rest and tempo. The app doesn't convert one into the other: if you want both, fill in both.

Workout logging also has sets, reps, load and a rest countdown. Saving the session earns you XP, and when you beat your own mark a PR badge appears. XP comes from logging the workout; RPE is a note for you.

How to use it in practice

  • Log it right after the set. Your perception is more accurate in the moment than at the end of the workout.
  • Be honest, not heroic. RPE is for you, not for impressing anyone.
  • Always use the same yardstick. 1 is easy, 10 is the max. Keeping that standard makes your notes comparable across sessions.
  • Start with your main lifts. You don't need RPE on everything. Pick the exercises you most want to track.
  • Read RPE alongside everything else. The score makes more sense next to load, reps, and how you slept and how your day went.

"Is my load too light?"

This question comes up a lot. One set that felt easy on one day, on its own, doesn't say much.

If the same sets keep feeling easy across several logged sessions, that's worth a review. Take that history to a conversation with a professional (CREF), or use it when you build your next plan. Your RPE notes make that conversation more concrete, because you can show what you felt instead of trying to remember.

IronSystem doesn't suggest loads or adjust the weight for you. The decision stays yours, ideally with professional guidance.

When to talk to a professional (CREF)

RPE is a personal note, not a diagnosis. See a physical education professional (CREF) for personalized guidance on load, technique and planning.

Pain, injury, dizziness or unusual fatigue mean you should stop and see a professional. IronSystem is a logging and template tool: it does not replace a personal trainer (CREF) or medical advice.
