How to Track Body Composition on Your Phone (and Why It Matters)
The number on the scale mixes fat, lean mass, and water. To know whether your training is changing your body, look at your body composition and track measurements over time. On your phone, that means keeping every bioimpedance exam with its date and comparing one to the next, instead of trusting the scale alone.
A logging tool. IronSystem does not measure body composition: you type in the values or upload your own exam. It does not replace a dietitian, a doctor, or a certified fitness professional.
Why weight alone misleads you
Two extra kilos on the scale could be fat, muscle, retained water, or just Sunday lunch. Two kilos less could be fat, but it could also be water or lean mass lost from eating too little and training poorly.
That's why so many people get discouraged: they train well for weeks, the weight doesn't move, and it looks like nothing happened. Sometimes something did happen. It's common for people who start training to gain lean mass and lose fat at the same time (body recomposition), while the scale shows almost the same number.
Weight is still useful. It just doesn't tell the whole story.
What bioimpedance measures (and its limits)
Bioimpedance sends a weak electrical current through your body and, based on the resistance, estimates how much of your weight is fat, lean mass, skeletal muscle, and water. A typical result includes:
- weight and body fat percentage;
- lean mass and skeletal muscle;
- hydration (body water);
- on some devices, a metabolism estimate.
It's an estimate, not an exact measurement. And it shifts with things that have nothing to do with your training:
- hydration: drinking too little or too much water beforehand changes the result;
- time of day and food: measuring fasted in the morning or after lunch gives different numbers;
- recent training: measuring right after a workout skews the reading;
- device: different scales and machines use different formulas.
The practical rule is simple: compare yourself to yourself. Same device, same time of day, same prep. That way, the difference between one measurement and the next is more likely to be a real change in your body, not in the method.
How to track it on your phone
A single exam says little. The value is in the sequence. To track it on your phone:
- Save every exam with its date. A photo of the report lost in your camera roll isn't a history.
- Always record the same fields. Weight, body fat %, lean mass, and skeletal muscle already give you a good picture.
- Watch the trend, not one point. One odd measurement can be hydration. Three measurements moving the same way say more.
- Pair it with your training. Body composition makes more sense next to what you trained and how your load and PRs evolved.
Body composition in IronSystem
In IronSystem, body composition lives under Profile → Bioimpedance log. Before your first measurement, fill in your Details (sex, birth date, and height). Without them, the Save measurement button and the file upload aren't available, and the screen itself points you to Details.
After that, you have two options:
- Type in the values: enter the date in Measured at, your Weight (kg) and Body fat % (required), and, if your exam includes them, Lean mass, Skeletal muscle, Hydration, and Metabolism note.
- Use your exam: upload the report (PDF or photo, up to 10 MB) and tap Read exam. The System extracts the values from the report for your in-app rank. It isn't a clinical assessment.
Each measurement is saved with the date it was taken, so the next one can be compared with the last.
This is where the game part comes in. In IronSystem, your training turns into XP, and accumulated XP never resets. A bioimpedance exam sets your rank floor: your displayed rank is the higher of your XP rank and that floor. When you save an exam, an exam XP notice appears, and the amount varies by exam. To understand ranks and stats, see which app turns workouts into a game.
IronSystem doesn't estimate body fat from a photo and doesn't diagnose anything. It keeps what you measured and puts it next to your training.
How often to measure
Body composition changes slowly. Measuring every day or every week usually shows more noise (water, time of day, meals) than real change.
In general, it makes more sense to measure every few weeks, always on the same device with the same prep. The right interval for you depends on your goal and on who follows your case: agree on it with your dietitian or doctor, and follow the prep instructions the testing location gives you.

FAQ
How do I track body composition on my phone?
Save every bioimpedance exam with its date and always record the same fields (weight, body fat %, lean mass). In IronSystem, that's under Profile → Bioimpedance log, by typing in the values or uploading your exam.
Is bioimpedance reliable? Home scale or clinic?
It's an estimate, and each device has its own formula. What matters most is comparing yourself to yourself: same device and same prep every time. A home scale is good for spotting a trend, not for an exact number. For a fuller assessment, see a professional.
Does IronSystem measure my body composition?
No. You type in the values from your exam or upload the file and tap Read exam. The app organizes your measurements and connects them to your training progress.
Does a bioimpedance exam change my rank?
Yes: a bioimpedance exam sets your rank floor. Your displayed rank is the higher of your XP rank and that floor. Saving an exam also earns XP, and the amount varies.
Do I have to pay to log my bioimpedance?
No. Body composition logging is part of the free account.
